Brief Introduction to Cargill

Cargill, Incorporated is an international provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services. In its 2005 fiscal year, Cargill reported a revenue up to US$72.1 billion, which would rank it number 15 in the Fortune 500 for 2005 if it were publicly listed. Cargill started trade with China soon after President Nixon’s visit in 1972. Today, Cargill’s annual trade value with China today exceeds US$ 3 billion. Cargill is the largest buyer of Chinese maize in recent years and opened new markets for Chinese maize. The company also buys apple juice concentrate, steel and other commodities from China while selling China various food products and fertilizers. Cargill operates 27 wholly owned companies and joint ventures within 18 provinces in China. Cargill and its joint venture partners have invested about $500 million in China’ agricultural and food sectors. Projects range from soybean crushing in Guangdong to corn processing in Jilin and animal feed production in Sichuan. Other Cargill businesses produce feed proteins, refine corn, and produce speciality food ingredients. Cargill and its joint ventures employ over 3600 people in China.
